VAN DER PLAS GALLERY is  hosting an exhibition with Outsider Artist Ahomeka Southerland on Friday August 6th.

Ahomeka Southerland was born in 1961 in New York City to a large family.  The 14th of 15 children, his mother was an artist and his father an ordained minister who was also a singer and a baker.  Ahomeka was only 4 years old when his mother passed away, leaving the 15 kids in the care of their father. 

Since early childhood Ahomeka showed interest in the arts.  He studied art books in the library and also studied and copied comic book pages.  His three older sisters followed their mother’s artistic path and Ahomeka studied and copied their art as well.  By the time he was 12 years old, one of his sisters gave him a “How To Draw Horses” book that he studied intently.  Later in high school, Ahomeka took art classes in which he learned some basic art techniques.
